Every subtitle added to Thoughts Become Things tells its own story, and the French translation is no different.

Late in 2025, the team behind the film received an unexpected message from a film festival based on an island off the coast of France. It was an invitation to submit, a small but meaningful signal that the film’s reach was extending further than anticipated. By the time the email was seen, the submission window had already closed. But the festival offered something just as valuable: the chance to be considered for their 2026 programme.

Rather than wait, the team chose to prepare.

To bring the film into French, Stephan turned to Dino, a native of Paris who has made Bermuda his home and a friend of the team. Rooted in French culture but deeply familiar with Bermudian life, he was the right person for this work. It echoes how the Spanish translation came together, through collaboration with people who could hold both worlds at once, ensuring the words didn’t just translate, but travelled with their meaning intact.

The process, as with each translation before it, was one of careful interpretation. The Bermudian poetry at the heart of the film carries rhythm, imagery, and cultural reference that can’t simply be swapped word for word. Dino worked through the text with that understanding, and the result is a French version that shifts in places, as the Japanese version does, but never loses the thread of the story.

As of today, the team is awaiting word on the 2026 festival consideration. Whatever the outcome, the French subtitles are now live and available via YouTube, ready for French-speaking audiences to experience Thoughts Become Things for the first time.

The film’s journey continues.
